Mark Kaufmann, MBA

Mark Kaufmann

Mark Kaufmann has nearly 20 years of experience in the biopharmaceutical industry in both the U.S. and Canada. Prior to joining Allostera, Mr. Kaufmann was President and CEO of Celmed BioSciences where he was responsible for raising funds and selling the company in a deal worth over $40M to a European biotechnology company, Kiadis Pharma.

Prior to his role as CEO, he was Chief Operating Officer at Celmed with responsibility for the operations and corporate development of the Company including the progression of Celmed's three products into Phase I/II human clinical testing, the development of a new business plan for Celmed and its early merger with NewBiotics Inc. Prior to joining Celmed, Mr. Kaufmann was Vice-President Corporate Development at Nexia Biotechnologies Inc. in Montreal where he was responsible for building Nexia's biopharmaceutical business, including product development and licensing agreements. He was previously Chief Financial Officer of Conceptis Technologies Inc., a medical media and education company, and prior to that, Mr. Kaufmann worked for five years with MedImmune, Inc, located in Maryland, as Director of Planning and Analysis where he led the strategic planning and contributed to the development of MedImmune's commercialization strategy.

Mr. Kaufmann holds an MBA from the University of Michigan School of Business and a BA in Biochemical Sciences from Harvard University.

Sylvain Chemtob, MD, PhD
Chief Scientific Officer & Co-Founder
Sylvain Chemtob

Sylvain Chemtob, MD, PhD is a co-founder of Allostera. As a neonatologist and pharmacologist with more than 190 scientific and medical articles in his field of expertise, Dr. Chemtob is renowned for his leadership in understanding inflammatory mediators in newborn medicine and ophthalmology. He is currently professor of Pediatrics, Ophthalmology and Pharmacology at Université de Montréal, and Adjunct professor of Pharmacology at McGill University.

He holds a Canada Research Chair in perinatology. Among his major contributions to the medical management of premature infants has been the identification that ibuprofen can replace indomethacin more safely to close the patent ductus arteriosus, a condition with significant morbidity. His original observations have been confirmed in multicenter trials, and ibuprofen is now standard care in premature infants.

Additionally, Dr. Chemtob pioneered the concept of functional nuclear G protein-coupled receptors. He has also developed two powerful rational drug design platform technologies enabling the rapid generation of antagonists to cell surface proteins (receptors, channels, etc) that has resulted in two spin-off companies, Pharma-G, which was sold to Theratechnologies in 2000, and Allostera Pharma.

Christiane Quiniou, PhD

Christiane Quiniou

Christiane Quiniou, PhD, is a co-founder of Allostera. She is a structural biochemist with a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Montreal. Her involvement in research has been in protein chemistry and in molecular biology, particularly focusing on endothelial cell death mechanisms, enzymology and membrane receptor structure. She is the author of 3 patents as well as various publications.

She is responsible for Allostera’s development of its Module X technology platform and directs the discovery and early research work on the company’s products.

Shawn Barney
VP, Preclinical Development
Shawn Barney

Shawn Barney is the acting VP of Preclinical Development at Allostera. He is a consulting VP of Discovery and Scientific Advisory Board member at Trana Discovery, and consults for Argos Therapeutics, biotechnology companies based in North Carolina and Theratechnologies, based in Montreal.

He was President and Chief Operating Officer of Copernicus Group, where he effectively led the company to become one of the leading commercial institutional review boards for clinical trials. Prior to this, he was VP of Discovery at Cogent Neurosciences where he managed a team of 60 scientists to develop products for neurological diseases, and previously, at Trimeris where he was responsible for coordinating preclinical and early clinical efforts to discover and advance complex, peptide-based inhibitors of HIV fusion. Mr. Barney began his career with Smithkline Beecham in the department of anti-infectives and host defense. Mr. Barney is co-inventor on 20 issued US patents and co-author on over 50 papers.

He is responsible for Allostera’s preclinical development programs and laboratory support for Allostera’s planned clinical trials.

Carl Nicolino
VP, Corporate & Business Development
Carl Nicolino

Carl Nicolino has 20 years of experience in biopharmaceutical business development in the U.S. and Canada with about 50 clients of Nicolino Associates, Inc.

Prior to joining Allostera, Mr. Nicolino was VP, Business Development and CBO of QRxPharma for almost 5 years as a member of the founding team; was responsible for initiating deal discussions with potential M&A or marketing partners; was in charge of business plans, market research, and forecasting. He was a key player on the QRx team that did an AU $ 50 million IPO with AU $ 150 million post money in May 2007, the largest healthcare IPO ever in Australia, underwritten by JP Morgan. He was responsible for satisfying JP Morgan’s market and business diligence inquiries.

For 15 years he has been a business development consultant to Unigene, which is recognized as a leader in drug delivery systems for the oral delivery of peptides. Mr. Nicolino also had long term success in business development at Warner-Lambert, Parke-Davis, Theratechnologies, Sepracor, and as a member of the founding team at Labopharm including doing several large licensing deals. Previously Mr. Nicolino worked in high tech and medical tech in business development, marketing and R&D at BBN and at Becton, Dickinson for 20 years.

He has an MBA from Wharton and a BS in Physics & Math from Brooklyn.
